Damien is a roving Melbourne photographer searching for the overlooked moments of beauty in simplicity, he’s all about the small details. He relishes detail in everything from man-scaping his facial hair to cooking amazingly complicated dishes for those that live in his apartment building and even hitting the right notes at his favourite Karaoke bars on the weekends; his specialty number ’Come on Irene’.
His goal in life is to open a gallery where people can appreciate his work whilst enjoying fine wines, local cheeses and home-made quince paste.
Damien’s inquisitive character is inspired by a folktale of a very special friend’s husband and his unfortunate encounter with an emu! We mustn’t go too deeply into the details, I certainly don’t want to cause any public embarrassment, but I also fear that I might have slightly exaggerated the whole scenario by playing out it in my mind in so many different ways! Damien’s biggest feature is by far, his luscious locks; the variegations of stitching with the Finley thread make the perfect layers of warmth and tonal difference when layered upon each other.
Stitchery doesn’t always have to be a long labour of love and sometimes-tricky stitches, and it can be nice to change it up! By stitching with primarily straight stitches you’ll find that you’ll be able to stitch more detailed designs and create more contemporary looking pieces.
The options don’t just stop there though, you could easily stitch a fill stitch within the lines to form blocks of colour to add vibrance to the design, or you could even trace it out onto fabric and applique pieces onto your background fabric to build it up.
Damien has a pretty busy lifestyle, and he often uses his favourite quote, ‘calm your farm’ to remember to breathe and not take too much on-board unless strictly necessary.
You can find Damien’s pattern here or at your local fabric & stitchy store.
